Our History

Pursuing Jesus since 1915

In 2026, a name change was considered to further distance the church from the Disciples of Christ denomination. The decision was made to keep the name First Christian Church, but to add an official descriptor following the name which states, “. . .”

In 1947, a lot on the corner of Mound and Park was purchased.

On July 17, 1949, the first service was held in the new church. The church is still here today.

The history of First Christian Church in Nacogdoches dates back to 1907 and 1908. In that time, several attempts were made to organize a Christian church in Nacogdoches, but were unsuccessful.

In 1915, the congregation successfully reorganized and began meeting in the Brantley Theater Building. A lot was purchased, and a contractor was hired to construct the new First Christian Church building.

Rev. Eustace Lamar Thompson became the first permanent minister and served until 1917.

In 2015, First Christian Church celebrated 100 years of shining the light of the gospel to the world. In a message to the congregation, newly hired Senior Pastor Charlie Colgan wrote, “God’s amazing grace has sustained FCC for the last one hundred years, and it’s His same grace that will carry us forward to the next one hundred years. We will one day pass that responsibility on to the next generation just as those who went before us have passed it on to us. Until that time, we will continue to live our lives dependent on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is the head of the church, relying on His Holy Spirit to make us more like Him every day, giving glory to our Heavenly Father.”

In 2014, the congregation of FCC voted to end its affiliation with the Disciples of Christ denomination due to fundamental differences in the denomination’s beliefs and the beliefs of the congregation.

The “Disciples of Christ” or “Christian Church” was born in America during the early 1800s with a slogan, “No creed but Christ, no book but the Bible.”
